The majority of people say that—when deciding where to donate—the performance of charities is “very important” to them. But only few take the time to actually look into it. And most who do, don’t focus on an organization’s social impact, but on secondary factors like their overhead cost. And they usually use that information to validate their donation, not to choose between charities (Hope Consulting, 2010). This value-action gap is unfortunate because it really matters where we give. As rigorous research has shown, the best organizations can be more than 100 times more effective in solving the world’s most pressing problems, such as extreme poverty, climate change, or factory farming (e.g., Caviola et al., 2020, Oxford). This talk aims to provide you with practical science-based insights that will make your money go further and also to give you a sense of excitement about some of the truly excellent giving opportunities out there.
